It’s Labor Day, once again, aka #Laboracay season in the Philippines! After 4 consecutive years of visiting the island–Boracay, that is (see my 2013 Laboracay post and 2014 Laboracay post), I’m finally throwing in my towel. If you noticed me getting a bit rounder and indulging on fast food delivery as featured on my Snapchat, it’s because I wasn’t planning on working towards a “beach body” for 2015. Of course, Boracay will always have that special place in my heart, with its pristine shores and powdery white sand… there’s no place quite like it and I don’t think I can ever make memories as fond as those I’ve made there. But… I guess it’s pushing it when one day, you just stop in mid-motion, probably in a half-arsed attempt at drunk-dancing in White House after downing 3 Pink Panthers in 5 minutes, staring at the High School student in front of you, puking in full view. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of my first day during my Laboracay 2014 visit–quite enlightening, if you ask me. It was then my boyfriend and I decided that Laboracay was no longer our scene. It was a painful pill to swallow because we loved being a part of something so fresh, so vibrant, so young, and so hip… but alas, that ship has sailed.
Of course, I won’t ever say “never” and you can count on me visiting Boracay again and again in the months/years to come… just probably not during Labor Day season anymore. In fact, I visited Boracay earlier this year for our company outing and it was just as fun, minus all the crazy parties and the shards of broken beer bottles in the Tides Foam party. A bit more on the clean PG fun but when you’re 27 and no longer a size 0, what do you have to complain about?
For those heading there in the next few days (or already there), do enjoy! I assure you, it will be one of the best moments of your year and trust me, you will get to meet all sorts of characters in the week-long parties–celebrities, High School students, college students, and a handful of the “once young” crowd. Order Happy Hour Mojitos from Two Seasons (my boyfriend’s favorite) or Pink Panthers from White House (my favorite), drink at least a bottle of Jonas Shake (they apparently use Bear Brand with their fruits to give it that unique, creamy taste), binge-eat Hawaiian Barbecue or the best 5-cheese Pizza this side of the planet in Two Seasons, stare at the sunet while riding the Paraw, go nuts and play with fire by riding the mechanical bull of the sea: the Flyfish, enjoy Beer showers in White house at around 4-ish in the afternoon (Vans party, warrup), or just lounge by the beachside casitas in Sur/Ambassadors (if you’re a premature lola like me). Go crazy and celebrate being young! Here are some more photos:
For those of you heading to Laboracay and want to get on the island looking like a perfect Cali Gal with sunkissed perfect skin, in your adorable neoprene bikinis but not quite getting there yet, don’t fret! Pimple break-out? Dry skin? Stretch marks? I’ve got a solution for you that will have you Boracay-ready in crunch time (except for weight loss because I can only give advice, I don’t do miracles).
If you follow me on Twitter, I tweeted a photo of the Beauty Box filled with goodies from Watsons’ over the weekend. As you may recall, I was overwhelmed by the surprise given my barrages of “Thank Yous” and “Oh My Gods”! Upon opening the box, my hands were instantly buried in an avalanche of beauty and body products. I seriously felt like a kid opening her Christmas present! Now that I was able to try most of the contents in the box, I think I am finally of authority to share with you the Top 5 products there that floored me (and they’re not crazy expensive too). Perfect for your Boracay Summer experience!
1. Miacare Spot Care Patch for the Day
I am a veteran with acne patch kits. I’ve been using them since I was 14. If you follow me on Snapchat, you would most likely see round stickers speckled on my face before I go to bed and I do that frequently when I see a small red spot. Call me neurotic but better safe than never! In my experience, putting an acne patch overnight on an offensive pimple minimizes your tendency to prod it. A really good brand will allow the pimple to become smaller. However, when I tried Miacare for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised that it deflated my pimple and removed the pus in the morning. It comes in an ergonomic design too that allows it to stick on your skin snugly without making the edges stick to one another or creasing.
2. Purederm Collagen Eyezone Mask
I’ve been using Purederm since I discovered it in Hong Kong Watsons a couple of years back and I love everything from the brand. I brought so many of their nose strips with me and I still have a few boxes left. Last year, I tried their collagen eyezone mask and I use it once in a while before going to sleep after a long and stressful day. It’s definitely an instant refresher for tired eyes! On top of that, I get to minimize eyebags too!
3. Body Expert Stretchmark Lotion
Though I’m perfectly aware that stretchmarks cannot be eliminated, I’ve yet to try on a product that promises to lighten it. I was told Cocoa Butter would do the trick but in the end, I feel like a good old sunbathing session will do the trick. The thing with stretchmarks is that it can be itchy and if your weight yo-yos like mine does, it’s important to apply every single day to make sure that the damage on your skin won’t be too apparent. Plus, it soothes the itchy feeling!
4. Avenine Rice Collagen Lotion
I think I’ve said this before but if there’s one thing I can’t live without on top of concealer, it’s lotion! In fact, I use lotion even when I don’t go out. My hands and my heels get dry quickly to the point that it disrupts my sleep, so I always make sure to slather on an ample layer on key areas. I was pleasantly surprised by the Rice Collagen lotion—it was lightly scented and perhaps, with the addition of collagen, it ensured that my skin stayed moisturized!
5. Quick FX Pimple Eraser
I came upon the Quick FX mattifying base a few years back when an ex-officemate recommended it to me as a substitute for my usual makeup base. When I checked it out at Watsons, I was surprised that it came in a hygienic tetra pack and that it was inexpensive! So when I saw the pimple eraser on my kit over the weekend, I decided to give it a try and see just how effective it was. Coupled with the pimple patch, it eliminated a few pimples that were slowly starting to sprout!
