At this point, I am already made aware by the fact that my FOSSIL Joanna used a line from the very same song I’m lifting my title from as well–Royals by Lorde (a song we’ve sang to in a semi-tipsy haze over Halloween). Awesome coincidence, huh? This goes to show just how in sync we both are. Sometimes, I think we think the same things and react the same way when faced with the same circumstances (more often than not). Even when it comes to the most shallow things like when we go out and don’t plan our outfits together and yet somehow, we always end up looking coordinated!
You know how twins have that creepy mind-reading empathetic connection to each other? We have something somewhat similar… which is great because, I’ve always wanted a twin! I mean, I have siblings but it’s quite different to have someone your own age, who goes through the same things that you do and who shares the same sentiment about certain situations. I guess you can say I like having someone who can relate with me on all levels, someone who blurs the line between “best friends” and “sisters”–which is somewhat paradoxical given that I am her brother’s girlfriend.
I guess it comes with the territory of being so “similar”; we have almost the same set of values and we are interested in almost the same things. We even talk alike already so when we’re co-writing articles, we can no longer distinguish which one of us wrote which paragraphs or lines. Sometimes, when we’re finishing each other’s sentences or thoughts, I can’t help but blurt out: “Are you me?”
So indeed, it has taken long for us both to find each other… but I guess it’s really just perfect timing. They say you only get to keep a few friends when you reach a certain age, but the ones you have left are the ones you’ll have for life. There are a lot of things I like about her–on a very shallow level, she’s a great shopping buddy and her taste is marvelous (obviously) but on a deeper level, I really do enjoy her company. Let me expound on that! See, the girl is sharp and cunning–she offers new perspectives or suggestions to every situation and trust me, they are always foolproof. Maybe that’s why we work so well together, simply because we produce results (and we’ve made wonderful output, ones that we’d call masterpieces really). Intelligence is something I highly value, in fact, I choose my friends based on their wisdom (and maturity, of course). I just gravitate towards high IQ… actually, I’ve made friends out of my readers, ones who are whip-like and sharp (I’m sure you know who you are, guys). My sarcasm is a perfect match for her wits and I guess that’s what makes us good partners. It’s an added bonus we look good together too (no, really). Yes, call us shallow but we do snark about every single deplorable thing on earth but don’t get us wrong, we advocate being unapologetically real as well–haters be damned.
So as Lorde states: “We’ll never be Royals” but the truth is, in our world, we’re damn near close. Before you call me snooty or delusional (color me new, really), let me explain (or burst your bubble)… yes, Royalty involves a lot of material things or superficial things–ones that we like to have, and may sometimes actually have (diamonds on our timepieces, yes, but I can assure you we have no tigers on a gold leash)but the Royalty I am referring to encompasses riches, and is rather, a state-of-mind. By this, I mean knowing your self-worth, knowing which company to keep (certainly the ones who are beneficial to your being, not just your social status), and knowing never to take slack from anyone who isn’t worth raising even a middle finger to. When you’re able to do all three, you learn to let go, move on, and surmount whatever obstacles life throws your way and then, you make do and make the most out of things.
People always ask us why we’re both so happy, fierce, and independent. That no matter what happens, we’re always able to bounce back. Well, I guess, that’s the secret really. It’s all about valuing yourself.
So for those who can afford to, be one of the “Royals.”
