As a teen, I grew up watching movies and series set in American private preparatory schools–think Cruel Intentions, Young Americans, Harry Potter, and Clueless. I could remember bargaining with my dad to cart me off to some US or UK private school (in exchange of spectacular grades) just so I could twirl around in a tiny pleated plaid skirt! Top that uniform off with some posh blazer carrying a prestigious school crest on the breast pocket then I would be totes fashionable on a chilly Autumn school day.
Clearly, he wasn’t at all charmed by my idea so my preppy dreams were thwarted. I decided to make do with what I had, of course, being the practical girl that I am. So before coming to school, I would fold the waistband of my uniform meticulously several times until the hems would rise and rest mid-thigh. I would then sashay comedically inside my classroom saying “hello” to everyone, the teacher included, with a faux British accent.
I know, I’m your resident weirdo.
So I came up with this outfit a little bit over a week after watching the finale of Gossip Girl. I reminisced on the fact that it was a TV drama that I’ve been following from back when I was seventeen. Gossip Girl was such a major fashion influence during my teen years–I mean, I have a huge tupperware full of headbands because Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf created a whole new “preppy school girl” look that was so hot (literally and figuratively) in my college; then, I got so deep into the bandage dresses fad and owned a pair of leather camel boots because Blake Lively as Serena would wear both ever so often (not together, of course).
Those were the days.
On the other hand, the finale outed who the “real” Gossip Girl was to the general public–they really did save the best for last! I have to say, I really liked how anti-climatic the whole revelation turned out to be. Granted, I was a little bit surprised, I’ve always thought Gossip Girl was Dorota or Serena but the secret identity made sense–this person has wanted to fit in alongside Manhattan’s elite so bad, plus this said person was also bent on exacting revenge! Hiding under the guise of pure innocence and nonchalance, you never would have thought that this person was basically trying to wreak havoc in the upper east side, and all for what? To get the person he/she has always wanted, to notice him/her! Sounds eerily familiar.
But unlike the TV show’s antagonist–real life antagonists should never be able to achieve their goals through malevolent acts. So for 2012’s biggest antagonist, well, I can’t wait for Karma to set in (or has it, already?) and I can’t wait for some sort of revelation, but as they say, in due time. XOXO?
This is what I wore when I met up with my best friend for a quick lunch date at Italianni’s Bonifacio High Street. I have a secret love affair with the restaurant’s Sicilian salad. Anyway, we proceeded to shop and I ended up with a healthy loot from Promod and Aldo but I had to leave prematurely because I committed to accompany my boyfriend’s mom while she examined her newly purchased house in Alabang.
I think the preppy look was very appropriate for our (my boyfriend’s mom and I) date, don’t you think?
Anyway, here are some more photos:
