Don’t forget to hype my look over at lookbook!
The one big misconception I managed to correct over the past three years about Japanese fashion is that it’s not just tantamount to cute or “kawaii.” Likewise, it’s a common misunderstanding to consider Japanese culture as the epitome of “weird.” It’s more than the sum of the two misconceptions really and all you have to do is google.
Thankfully, with the influx of Japanese magazines in the country and Asian fashion inspired blogs, we get a bigger world view of the Japanese culture in general (and their fashion scene).
Now, I’d like to think of Japanese fashion–street or traditional–as an oxymoron. Like how they all strive to be unique, I reckon, from the Western approach in style, and yet want to be a part of a certain subculture. Simply put, Japanese people want to dress differently to be like their peers.
More than a study on fashion, it’s actually a study of mindset. Hopefully, I can drop by Japan on the year 2013 to further my understanding.
Recently, I’ve been checking out Japanese splatter flicks–I re-watched Battle Royale and Audition, watched Prayer Beads and Grotesque, a few more. The odd one in the mix was Rashomon, which wasn’t even supernatural in respect and yet, it was eerie.
Inspired by Japanese period flicks, I ended up with a sheer chiffon robe, reminiscent of a fall Yukata, and clogs that remind me of traditional getas. I’ve always been crazy about chiffon robes, ask my friends, I probably have around 10 in my closet–I love how it’s casual yet elegant. I’ve always wanted a really long robe since Nicole Ritchie released one for her House of Harlow line.
So when I saw this a few months ago in Forever 21, I decided to just buy it off the rack.
These geta-like shoes from So Fab Philippines are somewhat inspired by Phoebe Philo’s Celine clog-wedges from last season. They’re extremely comfortable and lightweight, perfect for the summer.

Hope you all had a great weekend!
I had a wonderful one where I got to spend my Friday with my special someone, plus the Saturday with them girl friends and fellow bloggers: Marj and Crissey, then finally Sunday night with my family where I bonded with my cousin and their girlfriends over Karaoke and Left 4 Dead (with a slight lunch intermission with said special someone, hee).
Rest assured, more posts to come!!!
This set was taken by my household help by the way, who found things so amusing. Surprisingly, they were very quick with the composition! All I had to do was shoot them so they can see the composition and then everything panned out in less than 20 minutes!
Oh wait, coincidentally, this is the outfit I wore to Blogger’s United. Here are some long overdue photos from the event:
