Spontaneous Fashion like Rihanna and Mori-girl Knits Part 1

The thing is, I live in a country where the weather’s practically unpredictable. Sixty percent of the time, the weather is unbearably humid and prickly (yes, yes, I know I live near the equator, blah blah blah, rehashing grade-school Social Studies, and geographical matters can’t be helped so I should stop whining), while the other forty is a mixture between rainy and/or cloudy. Not to mention, incompetent weather services and perpetually inaccurate weather forecasts.

So last Saturday, I had a shoot with photographer Edric Chen. We were set to tackle the “great” outdoors (ie: Ateneo Dormitory Campus) but it started raining. Not that it was bad or anything, we both agreed that the atmosphere was pretty suitable for the theme and it was pretty reminiscent of London (grey clouds, rain drops, and puddles). I can’t speak for my curled hair and foundation though, I think they didn’t enjoy the light drizzle. Though I must say, it pretty much fit our peg: the  Karlie Kloss’ Vogue China editorial–you know, the one that made her look like a British bag-lady (yes, I’m aware that Karlie’s American).

So I prepared outfit sets based on the editorial–huge knitted cardigans, beanies, woven hats, sweaters, floral dresses, belts, accessories, heels, socks, more socks, and definitely more socks! If you’re familiar with Asian fashion or Japanese fashion, think of the Mori-girl (or jungle girl) style. It has a bit of an organic-hippie feel.

Here’s the dilemma: I couldn’t come to the shoot wearing something random and unrelated to the shoot because my clothes no longer fit the bags I stuffed it in, so it means that I had to take the thickest knit top I had and wear it. Next, it was probably thirty degrees outside so I can’t, at the same time, step outside the house decked like it’s about to snow. Given that, I had to compromise–so I wore an oversized pullover and paired it off with denim shorts.

Then I figured, “Hey, this isn’t that bad of an outfit!” Definitely not Mori-girl enough but I thought, why not make it a bit edgy? So I added my Rihanna-Balmain inspired booties, and the thick multi-chain necklace to override the soft look. I’m pretty satisfied with how this one turned out and trust me, I do go around the malls looking like this! <3

Hi Lloyda! Thank you! <3 Those shoes are pretty cheap and really, really comfortable.

  • mika

hi dom, where'd you get the shoes? sorry but i need to ask how much is it? btw its actually same with tricia, the tan color from parishian :)

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Hello! No, it's not the same. :) Tricia's tan coloured booties are from Parisian. My shoes are from Sinta and I think they cost around 2,500. :) You can send me an email so I can expound on it some more if you want.

I have the exact same beret. It's perfect! It spices up a simple outfit.

    Great styling. :)

  • http://twitter.com/whatiamloving What I Am Loving

I love how you look so different in every photoshoot. Very versatile. =)

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Thank you! God, I love that beret! It's just a bit too big though so it droops down a lot. :3

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Thank you! It sometimes annoys me though because people can't tell if it's the same person. XD

  • Aya

the beret is so <3 I can't even wear a beret right haha. it plops down whenever i try to. hahahaha :) ) I love how different each picture comes out. The versatility you have is very intriguing. I love it!

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Figuring out how to wear a beret is hard! There are times when I have to secure bobby pins so they won't droop off. XD If it's too tight, it'll give you “hat head.” Also, thank you! <3

I love the look! The shoes and socks combo is a favorite though I think I'm too young or have mostly stay at home to invest on good high heels. You are very chic Domz!

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

I happen to like shoe + socks combos! Also, depends on how old you are. XD 16 is a good age to start, but not really necessary. <3 Thank you!

  • Paxie

you look gorgeous Dominique!:) love how you made an otherwise simple outfit look badass:) love the shoes!:)

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Hi! <3 Thank you! Yes, those shoes are awesome–and really comfortable!

  • mika

Hi I’ve seen tricia’s booties at the department store…trying to purchase it but there’s no available size.. but thanks anyways :)

  • Pax

hey babe thanks for your comment about my soon to fail because of sucky pay fashion career. Lol. I'd probably do what you suggested–to just contribute and freelance. It's hard to give up my online store, homebased job, school, vacations, etc. just yet. Now I feel better! Thanks Domz;)

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

No problem. <3 I know how it can be upsetting. :< Also, random, I really was supposed to go to Port 88 but decided against it as I had some errands to attend to. I didn't know you'd be there but I know that a few of my friends (and by extension, yours, yay for common friends) were indeed there. I should've gone so I'd meet you in person. ;)

  • Pax

awww sayang naman! it would have been cool to meet you! next time:)

Hi Kookie, no need for the invitation as I do drop by your blog often. :) I initially wanted to ask you if you'd be interested in a link exchange but thought it too “dyahe.”

  • Emi

I love your hair and makeup here! I was wondering if you could do an upcoming blog on how to have makeup survive hot and humid weather?

Also, I know you and Tricia are really into Japanese fashion but I noticed you both like buying a lot of clothes from stores like Topshop and Zara, which are European brands. Would you say that your style is more influence by European fashion more so than Japanese fashion?

  • http://domzistumbling.tumblr.com/ Dominique Tiu

Personally, I think it doesn't matter per se as to where you buy your clothes? It's about which style to imbibe? I'd like to think that I uphold Asian Fashion in a sense because, first and foremost, I'm Asian, and next, I like the Asian style philosophy where clothes seem to greet you? Like, idk, they're so interesting that they say “hello”–which is basically why my blog is entitled Konichiwear. Also, when I go out of the country and look at Japanese, Korean, and Hong Kong mags, they pretty much buy clothes from the same stores Tricia and I get ours. Stores aren't really much of a determinant–if I like something, I'll get it. Be it in an Asian night market or in some American flea market. :)
